- After crashing his soapbox car into a wooden fence, Alex Phillips makes an astonishing discovery. On the other side of the fence lies The 587, a fully functional steam engine sadly destined for the scrap heap. In order to save this piece of history, Alex and his sister Molly develope a plan to keep The 587 on the tracks and out of the junk pile. With the help of an old engineer named Russell, his dog Sparky, and just about every other kid in the neighborhood, these unlikely heroes plan to take the 587 on the greatest adventure any of them have ever seen
